An Ultralight Hiking Belt That Weighs 1.3 Ounces

A leather belt can run 8 oz. That's half a pound of cow you're carrying up a mountain just to hold your pants up. Our hiking belt weighs 1.3 oz in a large and uses the same YKK buckle we put on our backpacks.

The belts that come free with hiking pants are usually flimsy junk that stretches out by the second trip. This is 1" heavy duty webbing that doesn't. And because the buckle is a squeeze-release instead of a prong, you can work it with cold hands or gloves on, which is the whole point at 6 a.m. in October.

Hiking Belt FAQ

What size hiking belt should I order?
Use your pant waist size. If you're between sizes, go up. You can trim the webbing with scissors, so too long is fixable and too short isn't. Leave about 6 inches of tail when you trim.

Will it set off airport metal detectors?
The buckle is plastic, not metal. Leave it on.

Does it work with a backpack hip belt?
Yes. It's a flat 1" webbing belt with a low-profile buckle, so it sits under a pack hip belt without a pressure point. That's the main reason people switch off leather.

Is a hiking belt actually worth it, or is this a gimmick?
Honest answer: if you already own a nylon belt that works, keep it. This is for folks replacing a heavy leather belt or the throwaway belt their pants came with. Cutting 6 or 7 oz for the price of a belt is one of the cheapest weight savings in your whole kit, but we're not going to pretend it's life changing.
